Hosting speeds comparison project v2.0

How fast IS your web host actually? - HostingSpeeds.com is home of the 'Hosting speeds comparison project', where web hosts are ranked by their actual speed*, giving you an independent and accurate 'Real World' & 'Real Time' comparison of the hosting market! Both web hosts and their web hosting clients can submit a web host for speed comparison. Our web host speed comparison project is 100% free to join and 100% free to use. The project was launched on July 17, 2005 and will never end.

So far 2878 web hosts have been submitted for speed comparison. From the performed pageload and server speed tests we build a world wide ranking (see below), Fastest 50 web hosts by continent (at the right) and local country rankings (click on the flags on the map below).

All users and web hosts can lookup their web host speed stats in their private accounts. If your web host installs our speed banner to their main page we list your web host in our public rankings so our users can verify your host is really fast!

Yesterday we had 10169 page views. We have reached over 5,000,000 page views within 18 months after our launch on July 16, 2005.

About our hosting speeds comparison project

Below we explain in short how web host speed is measured and how web hosts are ranked and showed within our project.

Speed comparison is based on two tests
We rank web hosts by speed. Speed is measured by two different tests: the page load test run on the web host server (run in batches and is influenced by user connection speed) and the server speed test peformed from our 5 locations world wide (which is a user speed independent bulk test).

Page load time
The first test is a 100kb 'page load test' which - in short - simply starts a timer, loads itself, closes the timer and reports the measured speed to our database at hostingspeeds. You can perform this test by clicking the bulk page load test link. These speed tests are performed on the server of the web host itself. Your internet connection speed influences how fast this file will be loaded, so we needed a way to prevent web hosts to profit or suffer from extremely fast resp. extremely slow speed results. Therefore individual page load tests have been disabled. You can only perform page load test on all web hosts in bulk. That way all web hosts are tested with the same speed within a bulk test. The bulk page load test can be performed from the link on the top of our site and from your user or hosting company account. Individual speed tests from our speed banners you see on many web host main pages can only be used for trial speed tests. This bulk pageload test will only affect the local country rankings. The world wide ranking is not influenced by the pageload speed in v2.0;

Server speed
The second test is called 'server speed test' and is new in HostingSpeeds v2.0. This test measures server speed simultaneously from 5 locations world wide. Your own location, your internet connection speed and the location of HostingSpeeds.com is irrelevant for this test. The results of all performed tests are reported to our database. This test can be performed from your user or hosting company account and from each web host detail page. Read more in our detailed explanatory page.

Cheat detection
All page load test and server speed test results that are reported back to our site have to pass all our cheat detection rules before they are stored as valid in our database. At this time almost 20 cheat detection systems are active. The new server speed test is uncheatable.

How we rank
From the hundreds of thousands of test results we build several rankings. All web hosts are ranked in our world wide ranking, our local country rankings, our hosting plans price ranking and our most tested web hosts ranking. How this is done is explained below.

Rank calculation
The local country ranking of each web host is based on 50% page load time average and 50% server speed average. The world ranking and the world ratings are fully based on the new server speed test v2.0.

World wide ranking
The world wide speed rank is fully based on the average of the server speed test measured from all our 5 check locations world wide in the last 30 days. Read more on our detailed explanatory page.

Local country ranking
The local country speed rank is based on 50% of the average page load speed of our 100kb test file performed by users from the country in the last 3 days and on on 50% of the average of the world wide server speed test as measured from all our 5 check locations. If no bulk page load tests have been performed from a country every 3 days, the local country ranking shows a '-' on page load average. Read more on our detailed explanatory page.

Speed banner placement
We only show web hosts with our speed banner on their main page, because we want our visitors to be able to verify their speed by performing a trial speed test from the installed speed banner. If you do not want your web host speed details to be shown to our public, simply do not install the speed banner.

Common mistake understanding the rankings #1
Although we rank all web hosts, we only show the web hosts that have our speed banner on their main page. Therefore a web host that is listed on top, can have a world wide ranking of 2 or even 10, or 16. We do not show web hosts without a speed banner on their main page, because our visitors cannot verify their speed.

Common mistake understanding the rankings #2
Each web host has two rankings: a world wide ranking and a local country ranking based on where there office is located. You will often see differences between these 2 rankings, for instance you see a web host that has a high world wide ranking, but a low local country ranking. This is not a script error, this is based on this web host performing better on international page loads and worse on local speed tests!

Common mistake understanding the rankings #3
A web host drops in the rankings if the world wide page load average, the local country page load average or any of the server speed test averages is not known. The ranking then shows a '-'.

We do not test ourselves
All speed averages of the web hosts are retrieved by our visitors performing the bulk page load test and by our visitors performing the server speed test. Our script does not test anything itself! So, we basically depend on the help of our visitors performing these tests on a regular basis.

- Registration and use of our project is 100% free;
- Web hosts also need a user account to test their host speed;
- We do not run a hosting company ourselves;
- More detailed statistics are available if you log in to your account;
- The batch page load test takes some time to complete. Only fully completed batches are approved;
- Only our users and visitors can perform tests;
- All web hosts are ranked, but we only show web hosts that have installed our speed banner to their main page;
- We protect your page load average against unexpected extreme slow speeds results;
- Perform the bulk pageload speed test on a daily basis. It helps keeping all page load averages fresh;
- Perform the bulk server speed test on a daily basis. It helps keeping all server speed averages fresh;
- Page load batches are approved/disapproved automatically. Recounts are performed by our admin and power users serveral times per day;
- All web host signups need admin approval. It can take some time for all average speeds of your web host are calculated;.
